Quoting TMZ sources, a New York Post report cites the kids were taken from the home because it has been deemed an “unsafe environment” by the LA County Department of Children and Family Services, which removed the kids from the home last Thursday.

A source close to the family told E! News Mueller is not upset that her boys are with Richards, as Mueller trusts her.

A lot of Americans have adopted Russian orphans, but some agitators have begun successfully lobbying against that practice. Those opposed to the American adoptions cite the example of two young Russian boys who died in American custody. The two orphans were from the same orphanage and died within five years of each other.

Two young boys from this out-of-the-way town, they became symbols for those who successfully agitated to stop the flow of Russian children into American homes.

Child Custody Dispute Leads To Murder

A man murdered five people in Manchester last week. Investigators are saying that he was involved in a custody battle over his 3 year-old. The murders were part of a planned attack against the child’s mother’s family.

The Illinois State Police says the murder of five people in Manchester last week was a planned attack surrounding a child custody dispute.

Police say the suspect, Rick Smith, 43, of rural Morgan County, was involved in a dispute over his 3-year-old daughter with Rita Luark. Luark was the daughter of JoAnn Sinclair, mother of Brittney Luark and grandmother of Nolan and Brantley Ralston, all victims in the shooting. James Ralston was also killed. None of the victims were related to Smith.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office says that on March 27, the office facilitated an exchange of custody between Smith and Luark, which occurred without incident. Police say Smith believed that Rita Luark’s relatives in Manchester were interfering with their custody dispute. Continue reading…

Otelco Inc, a telecom services provider, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy March 24.  The provider lost a contract from Time Warner Cable Inc.  The company had been initiating terms to reduce their debt.

Otelco said at that time the debt restructuring would best be implemented through a “prepackaged” Chapter 11 filing, which had the support of the company’s senior lenders. In a prepackaged bankruptcy, management negotiates the general terms of a bankruptcy plan with major creditors prior to the filing.

The company said last April that Time Warner Cable would not renew a wholesale voice contract which accounted for 12.3 percent of Otelco’s total revenue of $74.5 million for the nine months to September 30, 2012. The contract expired on December 31.

Otelco’s revenue potential was also hit by a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) order in late 2011 that lowered certain access rates by changing the way telecom carriers are compensated for exchanging traffic, the company said in Sunday’s court filing.  Continue reading…

As anachronistic as a paper directory may seem in these days of Google (GOOG) and Yelp (YELP), the yellow pages are still active businesses. As I previously reported, publishers distributed 422 million directories in 2011. And despite their long decline, yellow pages still generate enough cash to entice some private equity and hedge fund investors. John Paulson’s hedge fund is one of the largest investors in SuperMedia, and AT&T (T) last year sold a stake in its directory business—named simply Yellow Pages—to Cerberus Capital Management in a deal that values the unit at $1.4 billion.

That’s not to say there’s no risk in the companies, particularly for creditors. Both Dex and SuperMedia are quite familiar with bankruptcy. In 2009, Dex One, which was created out of the businesses of Sprint (S) and the old Qwest Communications, went through bankruptcy to halve its $12 billion in debt. And SuperMedia was formed out of the 2009 bankruptcy of the directory business Verizon Communications (VZ) spun off in 2006. Casino Hopeful Files For Bankruptcy

A New Jersey Casino, Revel, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  It was hoped Revel would turn around Atlantic City’s failing casino market.  The pre-packaged bankruptcy will convert the casino’s debt into lender equity.

A majority of Revel’s creditors has agreed to the filing’s terms.

The company hopes to have the plan approved by a judge and wrapped up by early summer.

Reader’s Digest has filed for bankruptcy for the second time.  The first time was in 2009 due to drops in advertising revenue.  This time the bankruptcy cites over $1 billion in debts, but shareholders are hoping to find value in Reader’s Digest brand, which has been around since 1990.

Mental Health Bills Bankrupting Families

An act was passed with the financial bailout of 2008 that required equal insurance coverage for both physical and mental health issues.  What looked like a victory for those suffering with mental illness, however, is proving to only save them about $178 a year.  Families with loved ones who suffer with mental illness are having a hard time keeping up with the bills, which is leading many into bankruptcy.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which was passed in 2008, tagged on to the financial bailout, mandates that health insurance benefits cover equally both mental health and medical services — so that those with, say, depression are treated the same way as those with diabetes or AIDS.

The law, which went into effect in 2010, applies to both in-network and out-of-network care and hung its success on a coalition of lawmakers who all had been touched by mental illness.

But a study published today in Pediatrics magazine suggests that this is not enough for struggling families.

The study provides the first empirical evidence that the law hailed as a victory for families does not “meaningfully improve” their financial protection. Costs have been reduced overall by about 5 percent, but the average savings is only about $178 a year.  Continue reading…

The number of people filing for bankruptcy in Singapore fell for seven straight years, but that trend has taken a disturbing turn.  Bankruptcy filings are increasing, despite Singapore’s strong economy and solid debt repayment program.  Some are blaming the increase in bankruptcy on inflation.

Power Company Co-op Creates Bankruptcy Plan

The Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative had to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, but have come up with a reorganization plan.  The plan aims to keep the co-op intact and would restructure the debt.  The co-op is also hoping to contract at reasonable rates in order to start paying off its debts.

A photo ID would allow undocumented immigrants an opportunity to apply for bank accounts among other services and potentially lower crime rates.  Critics of the proposal argue that providing additional assistance to undocumented immigrants will give more incentive for immigrants to come into the city illegally.

Fewer Deferred Action Applications Than Expected

There are approximately 1.3 million people that may qualify for the deferred action program for young undocumented immigrants allows immigrants that meet certain guidelines to apply to remain in the U.S without deportation for two years and a possible work visa. Of those 1.3 million people approximately 180,000 have submitted applications.  Some people may be waiting to see the outcome of those approved while others may be hesitating until after the presidential election.
